Built between the 8th and 9th centuries, the place was a water reservoir and had all this size because the amount could change frequently. The region is arid and depending on the season, very dry. The country has other reservoir of ancient times, but this one isthe deepest in the world.
Therefore, the air down there is usually 5 degrees cooler than at the top, regardless the time of year. On warm days, Chand Baori becomes a meeting point for friends in the region, as it doesn’t work as a reservoir anymore. But water at the bottom is always maintained to represent as it was at the time, but may not be withdrawn.
The stairs occupy three walls of the building. The fourth consists of halls on floors. One has a royal residence, made for the King and Queen of the time. There, lounges and a stage can be observed. On another floor, there are several sculptures, some are religious.
The stairs are in the small village of Abhaneri. There other reservoirs also exist, all representing the Indian medieval architecture. Chand Baori is already known in Indian movies, locals always use the space for filming.
